Enhanced Health & Safety Efforts

Wisconsin State Fair Park is actively following updates and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The following proactive steps have been taken to minimize the risk to all visitors:

  • Increased cleaning and sanitation measures throughout the Fair Park.
  • Utilizing hospital grade cleaners and allowing them the proper dwell time to disinfect surfaces.
  • Installation of additional hand sanitizer stations in the Exposition Center and Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center, along with additional signage reminding visitors to wash hands and use sanitizer.
  • Sanitizing restrooms with the Kaivac no-touch cleaning system.

Alternate Care Facility FAQs

Why was State Fair Park chosen as the location for the Alternate Care Facility?2020-04-16T15:01:04+00:00

State Fair Park provides an optimal location for this space considering its ease of access, abundant parking, and central location near several hospitals.

Who built the Alternate Care Facility?2020-05-11T16:33:27+00:00

The Army Corps of Engineers conducted an analysis of the site at State Fair Park and retrofit the Exposition Center to support medical care. The Army Corps of Engineers selected Gilbane as the General Contractor on the project. Many local subcontractors are also involved.

Construction is complete and the facility can accept patients if necessary.

What is the Alternate Care Facility and why do we need it?2020-04-16T15:01:09+00:00

In Wisconsin and across the country, cases of COVID-19 infections continue to spread, placing stress on hospitals’ capacity to care for a surge in COVID-19 patients.

State Fair Park was chosen as a location for an Alternate Care Facility (ACF), to care for COVID-19 patients should there be insufficient hospital capacity in southeastern Wisconsin in the weeks ahead.

It is important that everyone continue to stay at home, practice social distancing and all the safety measures necessary to keep the COVID-19 spread from progressing. The need for and use of the Alternative Care Facility will largely be dependent on the rate of infection in our community.

How many patients will be cared for in this Alternate Care Facility?2020-05-11T16:36:55+00:00

The ACF is managed by an executive team of hospital administrators who are employees of the Wisconsin Department of Administration.

The facility does has the capability to be scaled up to more than 500 beds, should they be needed.

What will the impact of the Alternate Care Facility be on the surrounding neighborhood and how will it be secured?2020-04-16T15:00:44+00:00

As with all healthcare facilities, the staff and security will work together to protect the health and safety of the surrounding neighborhoods.

State Fair Park has its own police force and public safety department that will assist with security, along with assistance from other local law enforcement agencies if needed.

Residents of the surrounding neighborhoods are encouraged to follow state and local guidance to stay at home. Staying home saves lives and reducing physical contact with others is the most effective way to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Where will people enter the Alternate Care Facility? Will there be traffic congestion?2020-04-16T15:00:37+00:00

Patients will be referred to the facility from a healthcare provider and transported as needed. Traffic congestion is not anticipated, and will be managed by law enforcement, just as it is during all events at State Fair Park.

I am interested in working or volunteering at the Alternate Care Facility. How do I do this?2020-04-17T18:15:02+00:00

The State of Wisconsin are recruiting healthcare professionals to staff the facility, which will be ready to receive patients the week of April 20. Interested health care workers, including those who have recently retired, need to apply through the website, Wisconsin Emergency Assistance Volunteer Registry (WEAVR) to learn more about the types of clinicians and other roles that are needed.

Please note that although the WEAVR system is designed to primarily recruit volunteers on a state-wide basis, this is also the portal that health care professionals – both active and retired – should use if interested in PAID positions at the ACF.

The Wisconsin State Fair Park is not hiring for the Alternative Care Facility.

Will the Alternate Care Facility affect the Wisconsin State Fair in August?2020-05-11T16:31:20+00:00

The Wisconsin State Fair is still scheduled to take place August 6-16. However, if this changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic and/or the need for the Alternative Care Facility to remain at State Fair Park into the summer months, State Fair Park officials will notify the public and media.
