The Wisconsin State Fair Park Police Department has a history that dates back to 1907 when it was first formed as a police entity. It was recreated in 2007 after a six year period during which the Wisconsin Capitol Police served as the law enforcement agency for the Fair.
The Department consists of approximately 105 sworn officers, all of which are Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board certified. All of the new officers that are hired go through a rigorous hiring process that includes oral interviews, extensive background checks, medical exams, drug screening, and psychological testing before being sworn in. The Department operates out of a station at the north end of the Fair Park grounds. The station has offices, a conference room, dispatch center, and a booking/prisoner process center. The Fair Park Police can monitor several police radio frequencies and work with the West Allis Police Department as our primary back-up department.
The Park Police operate two vehicles, a marked Ford police squad and a marked Ford van equipped for prisoner transport. In addition to the uniform patrol officers, there are a 13 person Mounted Unit, an eight person bike unit and an eight person detective unit. Besides the State Fair itself, police services are provided for The Milwaukee Mile and the Wisconsin Exposition Center. We have a large presence at the IRL and NASCAR races in June. There are numerous year-round activities that police service is also provided for. A corp of “Duty Officers” provides police protection for the Park from 8:00am to 12:00am 365 days a year. We have good working relationship with the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office as well as our neighboring Departments. All in all we feel that the Department is heading in the right direction with plans to continue to modernize the Department both in procedures and equipment. Park safety and friendly relations with Fair goers are our goals and to those ends we put all of our efforts.
